Michael O'Brien

Cecil Rhodes established the Rhodes Scholarships to bring together the future leaders of the British Empire, the United States and Germany. His hope was that the experience of living together at the University of Oxford would enable them to promote both international peace and economic prosperity.
His vision was destroyed by the onset of the First World War, which thrust these nations together in very different circumstances, promoting the opposite of peace and prosperity.

This fascinating book examines the stories of those Rhodes Scholars who left the safety of Oxford, only to die on the battlefields of Europe and beyond. Their stories vividly demonstrate how the Great War affected people of all walks of life, and how in death these chosen few fulfilled the qualities demanded by Rhodes’ impossible dream.
