Keith Brain

The story of a young man, Henry Arthur King, who was keen to serve his country in the Great War. He joined the Inns of Court regiment on 29th Nov 1914 hoping, after training, to gain a commission in the Royal Artillery. After some frustration he was successful in gaining his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery on 13th Oct 1915 when he was six weeks short of his 19th birthday. He landed in France on 16th Jan 1916 and fought on the Somme and Ypres.

Sadly, he was killed in Ypres on 1st Jul 1917. Details from the letters described in this book between Henry, his family, friends and fellow officers provide a poignant insight into Henry’s life whilst serving with the Inns of Court and the Royal Field Artillery and the circumstances of his death.

About the author
Having retired in March 2008 after many years working in I.T. Keith has always been interested in military history. But this interest became a fascination with the Great War during his research into the service of his grandfather, who served with the Queens Own Oxfordshire Hussars, and three of his brothers who served with different regiments in the war. After retirement Keith became a volunteer with the local Newhaven Fort in Newhaven, East Sussex, where he now lives, and with the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Trust based in Woodstock, Oxfordshire.
