Made vivid by inclusion of copies of original battle orders, photographs and letters this book contains personal views on life in conflict which are voiced in his diaries and letters home and clear sketch maps in colour show each stage of his deployment along with fascinating original copies of army orders.

He was awarded the Military Cross in 1918 for constantly patrolling his cable under intense artillery barrage and machine gun fire keeping up communication between brigade headquarters and the advanced report centre before successfully withdrawing his men before finding themselves isolated.
